Government plans to promote LPAs and will-making

18 June 2014

The Government has announced a plan to help improve the public understanding of Lasting Powers of Attorney.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney used for?

A Lasting Power of Attorney appoints somebody to act for you in the event that you become incapable of making your own decisions - that might be through old age, accident or, sometimes, if you are simply unavailable (for example if you are travelling or working overseas).

Depending on the type of LPA, this could cover dealing with your property (home, bank accounts, investments etc), or it could cover decisions relating to where you live and your medical care.

Greater awareness

The government is to hold a ‘life planning day’ next year to raise awareness of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) and other life planning mechanisms including will-making and advance decisions.

Thank you to the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners for circulating this news here.
