A senior charities counsel's experience of working at Wrigleys Solicitors
Senior Charities Counsel, Nicola Evans shares why Wrigleys has lived up to its promise of quality work, trust and collaboration.
When I first got an approach from Wrigleys, I knew about the firm, respected the team and liked what I heard about the culture but I wasn’t actually looking to move and, being based in London, I wasn’t looking to relocate.
But the more I got to know Wrigleys, the more it felt like the right place for me. The work and ethos of the firm and the Charities and Social Economy team chimed with me and there was a clear focus for the team and the role which felt exciting. And they had given time and thought to the London/Leeds logistics and presented something which I could see working. But it’s one thing when they are recruiting – is the reality the same once you’re staff?
I started at Wrigleys in November 2024 and, happily, I can say it’s been a great move which has more than lived up to the recruitment promises. I work remotely from London most of the time, but I think it says a lot about the culture and openness of the firm and the Charities and Social Economy team that I have never felt remote. There are also regular opportunities for a face to face catch-up, as members of the team are frequently in London for events or meetings, and my location means that I can easily attend London events with others in the team or to represent the firm. Everyone says it, but it’s true – the place really feels collegiate and like everyone is working together for a common purpose.
It’s easy to forget that the firm is relatively young - it celebrates 30 years this year. Maybe it is that youth that, coming in from outside, makes it feel so agile and dynamic. There’s an openness to new ideas and diversity of thought and things get done, with a proper and realistic plan which is communicated openly.
Coming in as a knowhow lawyer, the first for Wrigleys, I have enjoyed the genuine intellectual curiosity, expertise and engagement across the team. There’s no compromise on quality or range of work either. Knowing about the firm before I came here, I expected that to be the case – but it’s uplifting to have reality meet and then exceed your expectations, with a constant flow of interesting and complex work.
Wrigleys was established with a clear philosophy. Founding partner Matthew Wrigley’s aim for the firm was “to be recognised as experts in those areas of the law in which we specialise and to give timely, practical, common sense advice to our clients in those fields”. The firm knows what it does and why and, with that, comes a refreshing confidence which encourages a noticeably “can do” attitude. People who work here, across all legal or support teams, are respected and trusted to take on something and run with it, with appropriate support and encouragement – I feel it’s a place that wants us to succeed and thrive.
