Positive news for community-led housing

17 February 2017

A new Government White Paper may ease planning for community-led housing and support some rural projects and CLTs

On 7 February the government issued its White Paper “Fixing our broken housing market”, aimed at setting out a broad range of actions to help reform the housing market and increase the supply of new homes.

Whilst much of the detail is yet to be seen, the Government is apparently offering communities and community led housing groups a simpler and clearer planning process (particularly with regard to satisfaction of planning conditions), making it easier for them to get involved and shape plans for their area, much faster.

The paper also cites the early work of the Community Housing Fund, set up to support community-led housing projects such as community land trusts in many rural areas affected by a high number of second homes. The money will be distributed via 150 local authorities, and almost £20 million of the fund will be allocated to the South West, where this issue is apparently particularly acute.  You can see whether your local authority will benefit from the grant funding by checking the list available here.
