Community housing fund

April 2017

An update on the Government's 5 year £60 million pa fund to support community-led housing.

As many community-led housing groups will be aware, the government has allocated £60 million per year, for the next 5 years, to support community-led housing.  In the first year of this Community Housing Fund, the money has been allocated to 148 local authorities, focussing on areas affected by second home ownership.

The allocation of the Community Housing Fund in future years is currently being considered by the government.  The UK Cohousing Network, the National Community Land Trust Network and the Confederation of Co-operative Housing have submitted a proposal for the Fund to the government and are asking all community-led housing groups to lend their support by writing to their local MPs.

In summary, their proposal is that the government should put together a coherent programme for investment in the community-led housing sector, creating a one-stop shop for community-led housing.  This could be delivered by these organisations, instead of it being delivered through a new, separate organisation (which would not have the same level of understanding of the sector).  They also propose that the Fund should be distributed more widely than the 148 local authorities who received the money in the first year.
