Wrigleys Solicitors welcomes Nicola Evans as Senior Charities Counsel

24 January 2025

Wrigleys Solicitors is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicola Evans as Senior Charities Counsel in our Charities and Social Economy team.

This significant addition to our firm underscores our commitment to providing unparalleled expertise and support to our clients in the charity and social economy sector.

Nicola has extensive knowledge and expertise in charity law and the sector. She served on the Charity Law Association (CLA) committee from 2008 to 2020, and as its Chair from 2016 to 2019. During this time, she led numerous working parties to respond to key consultations, including chairing the working party that responded to the Law Commission’s consultation on 'Technical Issues in Charity Law 2015'. Her contributions have been instrumental in shaping charity law and policy.

Nicola also liaised and consulted with the Law Commission on an ongoing basis in the run-up to the introduction of the Bill which became the Charities Act 2022. She has provided evidence to a number of Parliamentary Committees and has led on consultation responses aimed at ‘charity-proofing’ a range of legal developments which impact charities beyond pure charity law. Additionally, she regularly collaborates with the Charity Tax Group (CTG), a national organisation that campaigns for the sector, improves understanding, and seeks to secure a fair tax deal for charities.

Speaking of her new role, Nicola said: “Wrigleys has built an excellent reputation within the field of charities law, and I’ve always admired their work. It’s clear from the growing team and impressive client roster that the department will continue to go from strength to strength, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the journey.”

Clare Lawrence, Joint Head of Charities and Social Economy at Wrigleys, commented: “We are proud to be one of a small number of law firms in the country with dedicated lawyers working exclusively for charities and social economy clients. Nicola’s extensive experience further enhances our ability to navigate the complex regulatory and operating landscape for charities and social economy organisations and to offer comprehensive support to our clients enabling those organisations to focus on the beneficiaries and causes they serve.”

Elizabeth Wilson, also Joint Head of Charities and Social Economy, concluded: “Nicola is a true charity law expert. Her knowledge is second to none, and she will bring huge value to not only our clients and department but the firm as a whole. We’re delighted to have her on board.”
