Ban on new leaseholds **update**

29 July 2019

Proposed community led-housing exemption

We are sure that many of you have been gripped by the government's proposals to ban new leaseholds.  If you have been following the debate, then you may have picked up that the government intends to provide an exemption from the ban for community-led housing, meaning community-led housing groups should still be able to use leasehold structures.  Thanks to all of you who helped lobby for an exemption and we hope our suggested wording at the time was useful.

Details of the definition of community-led housing are sketchy but the government says it is talking to the Law Commission, which is looking at other aspects of leasehold reform.  This is great news as we at Wrigleys have also been talking to the Law Commission about appropriate exemptions for community led-housing. In particular, we have suggested ways to prevent abuses of any exemption so that only genuine community-led housing projects benefit.  We hope that we have provided the Law Commission with comfort that safeguards can be put in place so that any exemption is not at risk of exploitation.
