Breakout 1a: Partnerships and collaborative working
Presented by Partner Joanna Blackman from Wrigleys' Charities and Social Economy team, and Claire Turner, Chief Executive of Carers Leeds.
Against a backdrop of strained finances and increasing beneficiary needs, charities continue to seek innovative ways of furthering their objects, including working collaboratively with other charities and third sector organisations. This session will explore what we mean by collaboration, and the governance aspects you need to think about before entering into collaborative working discussions with others. As well as considering the benefits and drawbacks of collaboration, the different forms of collaboration, and the steps to take to implement them, we are delighted to be joined in the session by Claire Turner, Chief Executive of Carers Leeds, who will be sharing insights and learning points from their recently launched collaborative initiative, ‘The Caring Kind’.
Breakout 1b: Conflicts and trustee benefits: a deeper dive
Presented by Managing Associate Hayley Marsden and Associate Daniel Lewis, both from Wrigleys' Charities and Social Economy team.
In this breakout, we will take a deep dive into conflicts of interest, duty and loyalty, as well as trustee benefit issues, and examine how these might impact your charity. Drawing on examples from practice, we will use case-studies to explore some of the different scenarios in which a conflict might arise, and how the updated Charity Commission guidance changes the landscape for trustee benefits and remuneration. We will provide practical tips and takeaways on how to manage and mitigate potential risks.

Having solid governance foundations in place is essential for the success of any charity but how do you know whether your charity has the best possible governance structures and working practices in place? How to go about a governance review can feel overwhelming and it can often feel difficult to know where to start. In this breakout session we will walk you through a "how to" guide to governance reviews, sharing common themes and sign posting you to top tips and resources along the way.
Breakout 2b: Dealing with DSARs as trustees, and in particular in the employment context
Presented by Partner Peter Parker and Associate Alexandria Evans, both from Wrigleys' Charities and Social Economy Team.
Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) are an increasingly regular tactic used by those with a grievance against charities, particularly in the context of employment and internal governance. However, they are not always easy to navigate.
